Nutrients used for good onion production: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, ammonium sulfate , and 1 cup equal parts blood meal and bone meal. Fertilize right after planting then on the 3rd week fertilize every 2 weeks with heave nitrogen. You can use a liquid fertilizer with 21-0-0.
Water once a week maybe twice a week if the soil is dry. Onion has a shallow root system so it needs to be monitored for proper watering. It loves full sun with plenty of compost.
