Tomatoes provide numerous health benefits that include antioxidants, heart health, bone health, and digestive health. They may help reduce some types of cancer and provide cognitive function. Tomatoes are a low calorie, nutrient defense food that can also promote weight management.

Growing tomatoes are quite easy and gardening is a great stress reliever. Here are some tips and tricks to make your tomato garden spectacular.

Typical PH level of the soil should be anywhere from 6.2-6.8. PH level of the soil is important because it directly influences the availability of nutrients to the plant. It also affects the activity of beneficial microorganisms in the soil.

Cold tolerance for tomatoes are between 32 degrees F and 40 degrees F. Cold tolerance is important because it determines the plants ability to survive and thrive in cold temperatures.

Nutrients to use for better plant production: Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, and Phosphorus. Usually a 3-4-6 or 4-7-10 fertilizer is sufficient. (*)Mix coffee grounds into the soil below the plants for a nitrogen boost. Also eggs shells provide protection from blossom end rot.

Plant each seedling 2 feet or more apart from each other. Early in the growing season water once daily in the morning and when the temperature increases water twice a day as they need about 1-2 inches of water in a week. Plant seedlings when they are 3 inches tall and have their first “true” leaves.

DO NOT PLANT NEAR TOMATOES: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, or brussels sprouts.

Companion plants: Basil, Garlic, Onions, Chives, Marigolds, Carrots, Celery, Asparagus, and Lavender.
